How to Make an Effective Complaint

In addition to presenting a problem or concern to the Committee at a public meeting, there are additional ways for customers to resolve utility problems. A customer can first work with the utility company, and if no satisfactory resolution is reached, the customer can then file a formal complaint with the Public Service Commission.

  • When first contacting the utility, the company may agree with your findings and resolve the problem to your satisfaction.
  • Decide what it is you want to accomplish, and be specific in stating that to the utility company. Do you just want to express your displeasure about high rates or do you want to make sure that you are being charged the proper rate? Do you believe the utility company is taking too long to fix a service outage or to establish first-time service?
  • If you do not receive satisfaction from the utility company, you can go through an informal or formal complaint process.
